How much of Rael's route is free?
The first step costs nothing: Season 1, Episode 1 asks "Did you decide to give us a chance?" and you can answer honestly. After that the route alternates — Season 1, Episode 6 offers "Talk to Rael alone" for 73 diamonds, and Season 1, Episode 7 immediately gives you a free "Trust him." before asking 66 for the full ritual. Play the free beats and you still get a coherent romance; you just see less of him.
Where the diamonds actually go
One choice eats a fifth of the budget: Season 1, Episode 14, "Oh, fine, let's try it." — 105 diamonds. Season 1, Episode 8 wants 75 to "Intervene and help Rael." Those two plus the Episode 6 talk are 253, nearly half the route. If you're rationing, skip the smaller mid-route buys and save for the Episode 14 scene — that's where the money is concentrated.
Is it worth committing?
At 524 for a single season, Rael sits in the middle: not the cheapest, nowhere near a diamond sink. Note that Ashriel and Sailen are also romanceable, so splitting diamonds between routes is the real trap. Decide on Rael by Season 1, Episode 6 — the first paid step is also the first real commitment.
